History of Wellington

Wellington is surrounded harbor and has a long history. At first Maori had lived there around 10th. According to Maori legend, Kupe was the first legendary explorer to discovered Wellington.Maori had called Wellington as “Te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui” means that legend of Maori‘s hero.Next,Wellington became colony by Europeans in 1840. Immigrant arrived in the "Aurora". In 1865, Wellington became the capital of New Zealand, replacing Auckland. Parliament first sat in Wellington on 7 July 1862, but the city did not become the official capital for some time. In November 1863 the Premier Alfred Domett moved a resolution from before Parliament in Auckland. Commissioners from Australia decided that Wellington was suitable because of its harbor and central location. Parliament officially sat in Wellington for the first time on 26 July 1865 The population of Wellington was then 4,900.
